What is a body scrub?
Body scrub is a type of physical exfoliant that often uses natural-based ingredients like sugar, salt or ground nut shells or husks to scrub away dead skin cells, revealing healthier-looking skin below the dry skin surface. As new, healthy skin cells are resurfaced, visibly brighter and smoother skin can be seen. Exfoliating ingredients are often combined with humectants in a gel or water-based formula to help the skin retain moisture.

Is exfoliation important?
Exfoliation is an important part of your skin care routine if you want to maintain the appearance of healthy, glowing, and smooth skin. By helping to removing dead skin cells from the skin's surface, exfoliation encourages the production of new, healthy skin. This process helps maintain the skin’s natural barriers, helping the skin to appear moisturised and assist in combating environmental aging factors like sun exposure, the cold and the wind. Exfoliation also removes rough, dry, or cracked skin that can cause irritation or discomfort. When combined with a quality skin moisturiser, you can feel confident about your beautiful, youthful-looking skin.

1. Soak or shower in warm water

2. Lightly cleanse
Cleansing your skin with a gentle soap or body cleanser first before exfoliation is a good idea as a preparation step. A thorough cleanse will remove dirt and sweat from the skin, allowing the body scrub to properly exfoliate and moisturise the skin.
3. Apply body scrub
Body scrub should be applied in small, circular motions. Be careful not to scrub too hard so that you avoid irritating the skin. Start with your upper body and work your way down from the chest, arms, torso, and legs. Don’t forget to apply on both sides of your arms and legs. You can also use a body brush or exfoliating mitt to increase the impact of the exfoliating properties.
- Some body scrubs recommend leaving on for a minute of two to allow the salts oils to soak in moisturise or stimulate the skin, or in the case of coffee scrub it allows the caffeine to do it's job and assist in blood circulation.
4. Rinse off
Rinse your skin thoroughly to remove the body scrub and dead skin cells left on the surface. Wash off the body scrub in circular motions to massage the skin and effectively remove excess particles of sugar or salt. Do not cleanse after.
5. Pat skin dry
Gently patting the skin, rather than rubbing to much with the towel, will help it feel softer and smoother for longer. Use a soft, clean towel on your newly exfoliated and clean skin.
6. Moisturise
Some body scrubs leave your skin with a beautiful coating of oils such as coconut oil, after using these body scrubs you will not need to moisturise for 12 to 24 hours after. The key to keep your skin looking soft and moisturised is to use a moisturiser in between exfoliating, this will maintain the skins natural barrier.
